Concierge-Style GP Care Comes to Australia: What It Means for Doctors

Concierge and direct primary care models reduce how many patients a doctor looks after. This page sets out what is sourced about those models and how home visiting differs.

Relias describes direct primary care practices as having smaller panels, usually about 400 patients in some models and 600 to 800 in others, and concierge physicians limiting panels to 100 to 600. On C.A.L.L.S there is no membership panel to build: you set your own fee, keep it all, and book 30-minute visits (how it works).

What the models are

Relias's explainer on direct primary care and concierge medicine describes both as reducing panel sizes to give physicians more time with each patient. These are United States models, and the sources describing them are US sources.

Panel sizes

According to Relias, DPC panels are usually about 400 in some descriptions and 600 to 800 in others, and concierge physicians may limit their panel to 100 to 600.

How home visiting differs

C.A.L.L.S is not a membership practice. A GP sets their own visit fee, keeps 100 percent and pays a flat monthly membership, with each visit booked as 30 minutes (how it works, pricing). The Premium plan includes a patient panel for repeat bookings.

Australian context

Medicare is a rebate-funded system. See the RACGP's guide to mixed billing for how Australian practices combine bulk billing and private fees.

Starting alongside existing work

A GP can start with a few visits a week; membership begins after the first confirmed booking (how it works).
