How C.A.L.L.S Changes the Economics of Being an Independent GP

Short answer

GPs on C.A.L.L.S are still independent contractors, the same as in a clinic. What changes is the cost structure underneath that work. There is no consulting room to rent, no service fee taken from each visit, and no patient quota built into the economics. The only cost is a flat monthly membership.

What replaces the room fee?

Instead of a percentage of every billing going to a practice to cover a room, reception, and nursing staff, C.A.L.L.S charges a flat monthly membership: A$299, A$599, or A$999 depending on how many suburb zones you want to cover. There is a one-time signup fee of A$199 that covers AHPRA, indemnity insurance, and Medicare provider number verification.

Crucially, none of this membership fee is charged until your first booking is confirmed, and it does not scale with how many visits you do. Whether you do 5 visits a week or 25, the membership cost stays the same, and 100% of every visit fee you set goes to you.

Why does this remove the pressure to churn patients?

When the room's cost depends on volume, slowing down to spend more time with one patient is a direct cost to whoever runs that room. C.A.L.L.S does not take a cut of your time, so there is no equivalent pressure. Visits are structured around a 30-minute minimum, because that is enough time to actually listen to a patient rather than rush them through.

What control do you actually have?

You set your own visit fee. You choose which suburbs you cover, within your membership tier's zone allowance. You choose your own hours and days. There is no clinic roster, no fixed shift, and no algorithm assigning you patients you didn't choose to see.

How is payment handled?

Patients pre-authorise payment when a booking is confirmed. Once the visit is complete and confirmed by the patient, the payment is held in escrow and released to you 72 hours later, unless a concern is raised. This protects both the GP and the patient without either side needing to chase the other for payment.
