GP Home Visit Safety and Equipment Checklist
A home visit practice runs on a bag, a phone and good habits. This is a suggested checklist, not a regulatory list - adapt it to your scope of practice.
The RACGP's Standards for general practices recognise home visits when safe and reasonable. What you carry is a clinical judgement. A common-sense kit covers core diagnostic tools, basic supplies, a sharps container and a device for notes and prescribing, and good safety habits include confirming details beforehand and leaving if you feel unsafe.
Why this is a suggestion, not a rule
There is no single mandated home visit bag. The RACGP's standards address when home visits should be available, while equipment depends on your training, patient mix and local guidelines. Check your college and insurer if unsure.
Core diagnostic kit (suggested)
Stethoscope, blood pressure monitor with suitable cuff sizes, pulse oximeter, thermometer, otoscope, torch and a glucometer cover many presentations.
Supplies (suggested)
Gloves, hand sanitiser, basic dressings, a sharps container and a clinical waste bag. Check expiry dates and restock after every visit.
Records and communication
A phone or tablet with secure access to notes and prescribing lets you finish paperwork at the bedside. C.A.L.L.S sends patients confirmation, en route alerts and ETA updates (source: C.A.L.L.S how it works).
Personal safety (suggested habits)
Review the booking before you set off, tell a colleague or family member your schedule, park so you can leave easily, and leave if a situation feels unsafe.
