Does Your Indemnity Insurance Cover GP Home Visits?

Indemnity is the objection GPs raise most often, and it is easy to resolve with one email.

The Medical Board's registration standard requires practitioners to be covered by professional indemnity insurance for all aspects of their practice. Whether your current policy covers home visits depends on your insurer, so ask in writing. C.A.L.L.S requires current indemnity insurance and verifies it before a GP's profile goes live (source).

What the Medical Board requires

Under the Board's standard, registered practitioners must ensure all aspects of their practice are covered by appropriate professional indemnity insurance, and renewal of registration requires a declaration to that effect. See the Medical Board's obligations page and AHPRA registration standards.

What to ask your provider

Ask whether attending patients at home is covered under your current policy, whether regular home visiting changes your category or premium, and whether there are limits on visit types or locations. Contact your own insurer directly, for example MDA National, Avant or MIGA, and keep the written reply on file.

Documentation

Contemporaneous clinical notes support both patient care and any later review. C.A.L.L.S lets you enter notes during or after a visit and generates a patient summary from them (source).

How C.A.L.L.S handles verification

Every GP on C.A.L.L.S is verified for AHPRA registration, current indemnity insurance and a Medicare provider number before the profile goes live (source: C.A.L.L.S how it works).
